What's New?

April 6, 2003

“What’s new?” That’s the question we hear over and over each spring as our gardening friends walk through the nursery and greenhouses. We all enjoy seeing the new varieties. Trying new plants is one of the challenges and joys of gardening.

We do have some very cool new varieties to offer you this spring. We welcome your visits to our nursery so that we can show you the “new” as well as the “tried and true”. Here’s a sampling of a few of the new varieties that we want you to see when you visit us:

  • Heucherella ‘Sunspot’has the brightest leaves you’ve ever seen! The electric yellow foliage with blood red center patches forms a tidy little 7” high mound. The dainty little pink flowers on slender 16” stems rising out of the foliage mound will put on a colorful display in your shade garden. This plant is a new release from Terra Nova Nursery who gave us the gold leaf Heuchera ‘Amber Waves’ last year. These two varieties are very cool plants! The folks at Terra Nova specialize in fun, out-of-the-ordinary plants and are particularly adept at developing great plants for shade gardens. Heucherella ‘Sunspot’ is definitely a showstopper...one you’ll need to see for yourself!

  • Another new plant for you hosta lovers also came to us from Terra Nova, who brought it here from Japan. Miniature doesn’t begin to describe Cat’s Eyes Hosta. This charming little Hosta venusta hybrid is listed at a “whopping” 2 inches tall. Cute rosettes of yellow-centered green foliage grow slowly to form mini mounds 6 to 7 inches wide. Tiny, red-veined purple flowers grace this petite plant in summer. It’s a “must-have” for your shady hosta garden!

  • Coreopsis varieties are well known to put on a great floral display in sunny gardens. But the new Limerock Ruby and Sweet Dreams take the prize for best bloomers! These two varieties were new last year but only available in limited numbers. This year we’ve got a boatload because we know everyone will want them. Limerock has ruby red daisy blooms with yellow centers and Sweet Dreams is a pinkish white daisy with raspberry red centers. They throw masses of flowers all summer until frost! Both have fine thread-leaf foliage that gives a delicate, airy appearance. Limerock will grow to about 15” with Sweet Dreams a little taller at 18-24”. Beautiful blooms all summer, comes back every year, and likes sunny sites...almost too good to be true!

When you visit the nursery, please ask to see our other new varieties. There’s too many to list, but here’s a few that you won’t want to miss:

Polemonium ‘Snow and Sapphires’ – variegated leaf Jacob’s Ladder
Echinacea ‘Ruby Giant’ – purple coneflower with blooms reaching 7” diameter
Phlox paniculata ‘Red Feelings’ – garden phlox that holds color for up to 4 months
